This previously published Tips and Techniques page offers some tips for advanced uses of Google to find images, videos, news, and maps on the Web, and how to use the calculator and language translation tools. Searching for Images Click Images on the Google main page to find all sorts of images (pictures) on the Web, that you can copy and use for your own projects. Caution: images and other Web content may have copyright protection that restricts its use. Check the site containing the image for any restrictions. On the Images search page, enter one or more keywords describing what you are looking for, and click Search Images. On the results page, you can narrow down the results to show small, medium, or large images. Click one of the image "thumbnails" to see a page where you can view the full-size image, and see it in context on the original web page. You can save a copy of an image on your computer from this page by right-clicking on any of the views on the page. Use your back button to return to the thumbnails. Searching for Videos Click Video on the Google main page to find video files on the Web. A selection of currently popular videos is shown, or you can browse in several categories, or enter some keywords to search for. To view a video, you must first download and install the Google video player. You can also download videos to your computer, e-mail a link to friends, or post them to MySpace or to a Blog. Searching for News Click News on the Google main page to find news articles from many sources on the Web. A long list of headlines by category for current news articles is displayed on the main news page. You can also view the top stories in several categories, or enter keywords to search worldwide news sources for articles on any subject. Google Maps Click Maps on the Google main page to find a map for any location in the world. Google maps are easier to use than other tools like Mapquest because you can type requests for directions and information as if you were requesting a Google search. For example, you can type "Vero Beach, FL to PBI" to get directions to the West Palm Beach airport, or try "restaurants near PBI" for a detailed map showing restaurants near the airport. The Google Maps page has a "take a tour" link to get full instructions for using this great facility. Google Calculator The Google calculator (used from the Google main page) has several functions. First, you can enter a calculation to perform as you would write an algebraic equation. If necessary, use parentheses to group terms. Use + to add, - to subtract, * to multiple, and / to divide. For example, if you enter ((3+7) * 5) + 15 - (12/1.5) Google will calculate the result as 57. Another use of the calculator is conversion between units of measurement. Almost any conversion can be performed: Metric system to English system (or units within either system), cooking measurements, and temperature conversions. A few examples:
tablespoons per quart A third use use of the calculator is conversion between units of international currency. A few examples:
3.50 USD in british pounds (or GBP) For more about the Google calculator, see the help page: http://www.google.com/help/calculator.html Google Language Tools Click "Language Tools" on the Google main page for ways to use Google to work with different languages. Here, you can:
Search for Web pages written in other languages (or located in other countries)
